Calculating card points
In baccarat, the calculation of each card’s points is as follows:
- A (Ace): 1 point • 2 to 9: according to the points specified on the face of the card • 10, J, Q, K: 0 points
If the sum of the card points exceeds 10, only the units digit is used. For example, if the cards in hand are 7 and 8, the sum of the points is 15, so the actual points will be 5.
Baccarat Rules
Draw Initial Cards
When the game starts, two cards are dealt to the dealer and the player in order:
The first card is dealt to the player
The second card is dealt to the dealer
The third card is dealt to the player
The fourth card is dealt to the dealer
Natural Win
If the total points of the first two cards of the dealer or the player are 8 or 9, it is considered a “natural win”, which means that the game ends immediately, and the side with the higher score wins. If both sides have a natural win and the points are the same, it is considered a draw.
Additional Card Drawing Rules
If neither side has a natural win, it must be decided by the following additional card drawing rules:
Player Card Drawing Rules
- If the total points of the player’s first two cards are between 0 and 5 points, a third card must be drawn. • If the player’s total points are between 6 and 7 points, no additional card is drawn.
Dealer Card Drawing Rules
The dealer’s card drawing rules are a bit complicated. Depending on whether the player draws an additional card and the value of the player’s third card:
If the total of the dealer’s first two cards is between 0 and 2 points, the dealer must draw an additional card. • If the dealer’s total is 3 points, the dealer draws an additional card if the player’s third card is not 8 points. • If the dealer’s total is 4 points, the dealer draws an additional card if the player’s third card is between 2 and 7 points. • If the dealer’s total is 5 points, the dealer draws an additional card if the player’s third card is between 4 and 7 points. • If the dealer’s total is 6 points, the dealer draws an additional card if the player’s third card is 6 or 7 points. • If the dealer’s total is 7 points, no additional card is drawn.
Decision of the winner
When all the cards are dealt, the one with the higher total score wins. If both sides have the same score, it is considered a draw. The payout rates are as follows:
Banker win: Payout rate 1:0.95 (usually deducted 5% commission) • Player win: Payout rate 1:1 • Tie: Payout rate 1:8
